Paul Piveteau applies his industrial organization economics and econometrics expertise to antitrust and competition issues, including merger reviews. Dr. Piveteau works with attorneys and experts on all phases of the litigation process, including deposition and trial. He has consulted on matters in the entertainment, healthcare, technology, and transportation industries, among others. Dr. Piveteau leads teams to assess complex datasets, including applying machine learning (ML) methods and large language models (LLMs) to analyze large and unstructured data.
Antitrust and competition
Dr. Piveteau analyzes class certification, liability, and damages issues in antitrust matters alleging monopolization, price fixing, tying, and exclusionary practices. His experience includes:
- Assessing liability and class certification issues related to alleged monopolization by a large digital platform
- Analyzing class certification issues in a matter alleging price fixing in the transportation industry
- Evaluating alleged anticompetitive conduct through vertical restrictions in the cosmetic industry
- Assessing the pro- and anticompetitive implications of pricing algorithms
Merger review
Dr. Piveteau consulted on behalf of the merging parties in the Alaska Airlines/Hawaiian Airlines merger and supported expert analyses through the regulatory review process.
Thought leadership
In his academic research, Dr. Piveteau studies how companies enter and compete in global markets and develops econometric models that estimate the role that differentiation and entry costs play in shaping this competition between firms. He has published articles in leading peer-reviewed journals, including The Economic Journal, the American Economic Journal: Microeconomics, and the Journal of International Economics.
Before joining Cornerstone Research, Dr. Piveteau was an assistant professor of economics at Johns Hopkins University, where he taught courses on topics related to microeconomics, consumer and firm behavior, and economic policy.
