Carmen Taveras consults on economic and financial issues arising in litigation and regulatory investigations in financial markets.
Dr. Taveras joined Cornerstone Research after over ten years at the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC), where she served as a financial economist in multiple capacities, including as assistant director of the Office of Litigation Economics. In that role, she supervised a team of economists and their cases and managed relationships with the Department of Justice (DOJ) and the Federal Trade Commission (FTC), among other agencies.
While at the SEC, Dr. Taveras provided economic analysis and guidance on hundreds of enforcement actions. She has authored expert reports and testified in depositions, administrative proceedings, and civil and criminal jury trials in federal courts. Her testifying experience includes:
- Analyzing millions of order and trading records in a high-stakes criminal matter alleging market manipulation
- Assessing complex derivative instruments in trials involving insider trading allegations
- Evaluating alleged front running by an investment advisor
- Opining on alleged ill-gotten gains and investor harm arising from failure to register as a broker-dealer
- Filing expert reports in matters involving crypto assets, allegations of failure to disclose, and Ponzi schemes
Dr. Taveras’s consulting experience includes cases involving valuation disputes and allegations of excessive fees, improper financial reporting, unregistered securities, and fraud.
Dr. Taveras has received multiple awards, including the SEC Chair’s Award for Investor Protection, the Director of the SEC’s Division of Enforcement Award, and the DOJ’s Southern District of New York Award.
Prior to her government service, Dr. Taveras was a principal in a consulting firm specializing in securities litigation.
