Norbert Maier brings extensive competition experience, including as an economist at the European Commission’s Directorate-General for Competition.
Cornerstone Research, a leading provider of economic and financial consulting and expert testimony, announced today that Norbert Maier has joined the firm’s competition team in Brussels as a principal.*
Dr Maier brings nearly twenty years of experience as an antitrust and competition economist, focusing on mergers, competition policy and state aid. He worked for six years on the Chief Economist’s Team in the European Commission’s Directorate-General for Competition (DG COMP), where he consulted on numerous high-profile mergers, including several Phase II investigations. His industry expertise includes digital markets, energy, pharmaceuticals, chemicals, airlines, food, insurance, media platforms, and retail.
His agency and consulting experience across a range of industries, including in technology, energy and life sciences, will be major assets to our clients in the EU and elsewhere.
Dr Maier has extensive experience leading economist teams in both consulting and regulatory settings. He has conducted competition risk assessments; developed product and geographical market definition; evaluated the impact of information exchange on prices; and analyzed bundling, excessive pricing claims and other alleged exclusionary conduct. Dr Maier leverages his deep understanding of data as a product to support clients on complex mergers and antitrust matters.

Dr Maier has conducted research on vertical mergers in the pharmaceutical-technology space and excessive pricing in the context of patent-protected drugs. He has published articles in antitrust and competition journals, including the Journal of European Competition Law and Practice and the CPI Antitrust Chronicle. He speaks regularly on competition and digital topics at conferences in Europe.
