Retained by Sidley Austin

MCI sued AT&T, claiming that certain AT&T patents covering intelligent network services were invalid. AT&T countersued, claiming that MCI had infringed those patents. Counsel for AT&T retained Cornerstone Research to help assess MCI’s allegation that the technology claimed in AT&T’s patents was obvious, and to quantify damages. To address the question of nonobviousness, we demonstrated the commercial success of services using AT&T’s patents. To calculate damages, we estimated a reasonable royalty based on actual licenses and licensing documents. The case settled.
