Antitrust Expert Spotlight: Margaret Kyle

Margaret Kyle is a noted authority on competition, intellectual property, and innovation, with extensive multinational experience with life sciences and healthcare issues.

Professor Kyle has substantive experience and a strong publication record on issues related to pricing of pharmaceutical products, R&D productivity, new product distribution, and competition between branded and generic pharmaceutical products. In addition, she has written about antitrust merger enforcement issues in pharmaceutical markets, with applications to other dynamic markets characterized by innovation.

Professor Kyle is deeply engaged in public service and contributes to important policy debates related to competition and health policy, supporting UK and European policy entities with her considerable expertise. She is a member of DG Competition’s Economic Advisory Group on Competition Policy, which convenes recognized industrial organization specialists to improve the economic reasoning underlying competition policy analysis.

Professor Kyle is deeply engaged in public service and contributes to important policy debates related to competition and health policy.

At France’s Conseil National de Productivité, Professor Kyle is one of eleven independent academic economists tasked with analyzing the country’s productivity and competitiveness, particularly issues linked to the eurozone. In the UK, she serves on the Research Committee for the Office of Health Economics, which provides independent economic and statistical research analyses to support authoritative decision-making about healthcare and pharmaceutical issues. She recently coauthored work at the request of the Conseil d’Analyse Economique, which advises the French Prime Minister and the Minister of Economic Affairs, on policies to encourage pharmaceutical innovation.

Professor Kyle’s articles have been published in economics, strategy, and health policy journals, including the Quarterly Journal of Economics, RAND Journal of Economics, the Review of Economics and Statistics, the Journal of Law and Economics, the Strategic Management Journal, Health Services Research, and Health Affairs. She serves as associate editor of the International Journal of Industrial Organization.

In addition, Professor Kyle has contributed to a number of books, including coauthoring chapters in the Handbook of Health Economics, the Oxford Handbook of the Economics of the Biopharmaceutical Industry, and Elsevier’s Encyclopedia of Health Economics. She is a research fellow at the Centre for Economic Policy Research (CEPR).

Women@Competition named Professor Kyle among forty notable women professionals in their forties who specialize in topics related to competition.

For more than a decade, Professor Kyle has taught courses on business strategy, pharmaceutical economics and management, and data analysis. Before joining MINES ParisTech, she served on the faculties of Toulouse School of Economics, London Business School, and Northwestern University’s Kellogg School of Management, among others. She holds a Ph.D. from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and a B.S. from Cornell University.
