The American Antitrust Institute has honored Gowrisankaran and Hatzitaskos for Outstanding Antitrust Litigation Achievement in Economics.
Gautam Gowrisankaran of Columbia University and Kostis Hatzitaskos of Cornerstone Research are honorees of the American Antitrust Institute 2024 Antitrust Enforcement Awards. Professor Gowrisankaran and Dr. Hatzitaskos are both receiving the award for Outstanding Antitrust Litigation Achievement in Economics.
Professor Gowrisankaran is being recognized for his work in United States of America et al. v. JetBlue Airways Corporation and Spirit Airlines Inc. As the U.S. Department of Justice’s expert witness, he analyzed the competitive effects of the proposed merger, including both unilateral and coordinated effects. Professor Gowrisankaran concluded that the agreement was likely to result in substantial harm to consumers. The Court’s opinion enjoining the merger gave significant weight to Dr. Gowrisankaran’s testimony on the effects of the proposed merger. It stated that “Dr. Gowrisankaran’s testimony was thoughtful and credible, and … [that h]e was also methodical and articulate in explaining his analysis and the conclusions that he drew from it.”
Dr. Hatzitaskos is being recognized for his work in FTC v. IQVIA Holdings Inc. et al. He served as the Federal Trade Commission’s economic expert to analyze the competitive effects of the proposed merger of IQVIA and Propel Media (DeepIntent). The court’s opinion granting the FTC’s preliminary injunction relied on Dr. Hatzitaskos’s testimony in key areas including relevant market, competitive effects, and ease of entry. The parties abandoned the merger shortly after the FTC’s preliminary injunction was granted.
